Pittsburgh’s topography created 90 distinct urban neighborhoods, all nestled in a region still robust with local and commercial farms still within a short drive of the city. Farm-to-table restaurants and urban agriculture also abound, with backyard gardens, chickens, and apiaries sprouting up around the city. In urban neighborhoods without easy access to healthy foods, community organizations and nonprofits are driving healthy eating through urban agriculture efforts and just bringing local farms right to communities. While Pittsburgh’s neighboring towns and counties still grow corn, soybeans, grains, and livestock, this local agriculture is being challenged by natural gas drilling and industrial pollution, causing daily environmental conversations about maintaining local economic drivers while keeping residents and land safe.
