During the height of Pittsburgh’s steel production, our air quality was some of the worst in the nation. Everyday citizens worked with institutions to improve air and water quality, showing national leadership and creating opportunities for innovation.  Now, Pittsburgh’s healthcare networks and higher education institutions help drive the city’s economy, while bringing international attention to local advancements in healthcare. While we still struggle with poor outdoor air quality, aging infrastructure, and isolated communities, Pittsburgh is innovating in new ways that combine personal health and the natural environment to increase quality of life.
